Persian Wars
In order to drive a wedge between the allied Greeks , the Persian general Mardonios submitted a peace offer to Athens , but this was rejected. Thereupon he lets the city devastate again .
In the battle of Plataiai , the Greeks, led by the Spartan general Pausanias, decisively win over the Persians under Mardonios , who falls in the battle. The battle marks the end of the Persian attempts to conquer Greece .
The Spartan King Leotychidas II and the Athenian general Xanthippos defeat the Persians in the Battle of Mykale . The Greeks destroy the remains of the Persian fleet that survived the sea battle at Salamis last year. The fight takes place on land as the Persian ships have been pulled ashore under the protection of the army.
