Persian Wars / Greece

Relief of Xerxes at the entrance to his palace in Persepolis

The Persian Great King Xerxes I from the Achaemenid dynasty is preparing another campaign against the Greek city-states after the rebellion in Egypt has been put down. Among other things, he orders the construction of a canal through the isthmus of Athos , which will take three years to complete. He wants to avoid a catastrophe like nine years earlier , when the Persian fleet under the command of Mardonios failed due to a storm off Athos.

Aristeides , opponent of Themistocles ' naval plans , is banished from Athens by a broken court .
