Arsames (son of Darius I)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arsames ( old Persian Aršama ; † 480 BC at Salamis ) was a member of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty in the 5th century BC. He was a son of the Great King Darius I and Artystone , his full brother was Gobryas .

During the invasion of Greece by Xerxes I in 480 BC. Arsames led the Ethiopian and Arab contingent. He was probably killed in the sea battle of Salamis , provided that he was identical to the person named by Aeschylus . In an earlier stanza that Arsames is referred to as "Lord of St. Memphis ", which occasionally leads to confusion with the later living satrap Arsames .
