Idy Hegnauer (born September 12, 1909 as Ida Häberling in Obfelden ; died November 19, 2006 in Affoltern am Albis ) was a Swiss nurse and peace activist .

Life

Hegnauer was a Quaker and a member of the Socialist Youth . She attended the women's social school in Zurich.

In 1937, Hegnauer volunteered for a humanitarian mission from the Service Civil International (SCI) in Valencia . She took care of the budget for volunteers from all over Europe who trucked refugees to safety from the Spanish Civil War . During the assignment, she met her future husband Ralph Hegnauer (1910–1997).

She remained loyal to humanitarian aid in the following decades, also in war zones. With the Service Civil International she did a service in Gaza and Israel from 1948 to 1950 . With her husband, she helped the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) with the distribution of goods to refugees as part of the UN refugee aid program. In 1950 and 1951 she worked in India and Pakistan. At the end of the 1950s, she organized a donation campaign in Switzerland for Algerian refugee children who fled the war of independence to Tunisia and Morocco, and set up several homes.

From 1980 to 1984 she worked in the children's hospital in Affoltern am Albis. For the Service Civil International she was represented in the committee of the Swiss Refugee Aid. In the last few years of her life she wrote an autobiography.
