Ignaz Mandl

Ignaz Mandl (born November 19, 1833 in Veszprém , Hungary , † May 4, 1907 in Vienna ) was a Viennese doctor and local politician.

Ignaz Mandl, from a well-to-do Hungarian family, studied medicine at the University of Vienna and was awarded a doctorate in 1859. med. PhD. He was a member of the Vienna City Council from 1874 to 1879 and from 1880 to 1889 . In his urge to uncover political mistakes, Mandl often overshot the mark, which resulted in numerous lawsuits.

As a popular Jewish doctor for the poor and "idol of the little people", he was the role model and mentor of the young lawyer Karl Lueger . He and Lueger, who had been elected in the 3rd district of Vienna, also appeared together in the Democratic faction for the municipal lighting to be taken over by the municipality and against the English gas company favored by the liberal city government of Cajetan Felders . With Lueger's opportunistic turn to a policy of anti-Semitism , the political alliance with Mandl also ended.
