The Igreja de São João da Praça is a Roman Catholic church building in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon .

history

According to tradition, until the earthquake of 1755 there was a small chapel on the site of the present church , which was consecrated to John the Baptist .

The present church was built in 1789 during the reign of Queen Maria I. Until 1885 it was the center of the Freguesia São João da Praça of the same name . In 1828 the painter José Rodrigues was baptized in the church .
