Jesuit Church Igreja do Colégio

The Igreja do Colégio on Praça do Município in Funchal on the island of Madeira is home to a Jesuit school and a Jesuit church .

history

In 1569 three Jesuit priests were commissioned by their order to set up a Jesuit school in Madeira. In 1599 they started building the school. In 1624 the foundation stone for the construction of the church was laid and in 1647 it was completed. Until the 19th century, this was the largest building complex in Funchal. Today the Jesuit school belongs to the University of Madeira .

Furnishing

In the church there are richly decorated chapels on both sides with windows and balconies at the level of the choir, including the Chapel of the Eleven Thousand Virgins with the remarkable altar. The architectural style of this church developed in the whole of Portugal towards the end of the 16th century and with the large nave is typical of the Jesuit temples. The high altar is particularly valuable because of its wood carvings. The walls of the church are partially covered with azulejos made in Lisbon.
