Ijara District was a district in the Kenyan province of North-Eastern . The capital was Ijara . Until 2000, the district was part of the Garissa District . As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Garissa County .
The people in the Ijara District lived mainly from livestock and agriculture, the unemployment rate in 2005 was 10%.

Education and Healthcare
In 2005 there were 20 primary schools and one secondary school in the Ijara District . The primary school enrollment rate was eleven percent. Only one percent of the children in the Iljara District attended secondary school. In 2007 there were already 33 primary and two secondary schools. More than twice as many children went to school as in 2002.
The Ijara District had one hospital, two health centers and five pharmacies. There were almost 70,000 people for one doctor. The most common diseases were malaria , respiratory diseases and tuberculosis . Child mortality was high, in 2001 9.2% of children died before their 5th birthday.
Bonuses National Reserve
In 1976 part of the Boni Forest in the Ijara District was designated as a protected area. The 1,139 km² area serves as a sanctuary for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, lyre antelopes , giraffe gazelles , Zanzibar duikers and Harvey duikers . The reserve is looked after and managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service . The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources classifies the protected area in category VI ( resource protection area with management).
