Garissa County (until 2010 Garissa District ) is a county in Kenya . The capital of the county is Garissa . In 2019, 841,353 people lived in the county on 45,720.2 km². The county has an arid climate with temperatures between 33 and 42 ° C. The people of Garissa County live mainly from nomadic livestock farming, only 1% of the county's area is considered arable. The main crops are bananas, mangoes and lemons. In 2005, 62% of the population lived below the poverty line and around 80% are illiterate . Child mortality is high in the county, with 8.9% of urban children dying before their 5th birthday in 2002 and 14.6% of children in rural areas who did not see their 5th birthday.
Transport and infrastructure
Garissa has a total of 1500 km of roads, 10% of the roads are paved. There are a total of 17 major commercial centers in the county, only one of which has electricity. The county has 29 health care facilities, 3 post offices, and 7 banks.
