Achisch (Ekron)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Achish (אכיש) is a ( Philistine ?) Personal name of uncertain etymology.

The name is known from the biblical figure of King Achish of Gat , to whom David fled from Saul ( 1 Sam 21  EU or 1 Sam 27  EU ). A king Ikausu of Ekron has been known from cuneiform sources since the end of the 19th century . The etymological connection of the two names was suspected, but remained uncertain. When a building inscription was found on Tell Miqne in July 1996, which names a ruler Achisch as the builder , it was possible to prove both the identity of the tell with Ekron and the identity of Achisch with Ikausu .

WM Müller assumed an original form of the name אכוש ( Ekausch ) due to the name form of vonγχους for Achisch in the Septuagint . However, since AJ Reinach the name has been associated with Anchises ( Ἀγχίσης ). The newly found inscription from Ekron, however, shows the Western Semitic spelling אכיש as early as the 7th century BC. Since the letter iodine has to be read consonantically, the basic form is * Ik (h) ajus / sch , which according to J. Naveh can possibly be seen in connection with the Greek Ἀχαιός and thus more of a nickname "the Achaeans" or "the Greeks ".
