Ikenna Martin "Ike" Opara (born February 21, 1989 in Durham ) is an American football player on the position of defender .
Career
Youth and amateur football
Opara played for the Wake Forest University soccer team from 2007 to 2009 . During that time he scored nine goals and three assists in 65 games. In his first year at college, he and his team won the NCAA College Cup Championship.
During his time in college he also played for the Cary Clarets in the USL Premier Development League for two seasons .
Club career
Opara was chosen as the third pick in the first round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the San José Earthquakes . He made his professional debut in the MLS on March 27, 2010 in the first game of the season against Real Salt Lake . He scored his first professional goal in his second game on April 10, 2010. Opara scored there for the 2-1 final against Chicago Fire .
On December 12, 2012, Opara was transferred to Sporting Kansas City . In return, the San José Earthquakes received the pick in the second round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft from Sporting Kansas City.
National team
Ike Opara made his debut for the United States national football team on January 29, 2018 against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
