Oiran: Eisen and van Gogh

Ikeda Eisen ( Japanese 池田 英 泉 , actually Ikeda Yoshinobu (池田 義 信), other artist names: Hokugo (北 華), Hokutei (北 亭), Ippitsuan (一筆 庵), Kakō (可 候), Keisai (渓 斎), Kokushunrō (国 春 楼), Mumeiō (無名 翁); born 1791 in Edo ; died August 20, 1848 ) was a Japanese painter, woodcut artist, and illustrator of the ukiyoe movement during the late Edo period .

life and work

Ikeda Eisen was the son of the calligrapher Ikeda Shigeharu and lived in Edo. He was first a student of the not very important painter Kanō Hakkeisai (狩 野 白 珪 斎), then the only three years older ukiyoe artist Kikugawa Eizan (菊 川 英 山, 1787-1867). As an ukiyoe artist, he was active in the Busei and Tempō era, i.e. in the years between 1818 and 1844.

He was an erratic, unbalanced, prolific artist who focused on images of beautiful women (美人 画, bijin-ga), erotica, and landscapes. These include the landscapes that he created for Hiroshige's "Sixty-nine Stations of Kiso Kaidō " (木 曽 街道 六 十九次, Kiso Kaidō rokujūkyū tsugi). His pictures of beautiful women are characterized by stocky figures, broad necks and round shoulders. An example of this type is the work entitled "Oiran" (花魁) in the Sakai collection, which van Gogh copied.

Eisen was the author of "Zoku Ukiyo-e Ruiko" (続 浮世 絵 類 考), a summary of various books on the history of Ukiyo-e. Even better known is the new version entitled “Tales of a Nameless Old Man” (無名 翁 随筆, Mumeiō zuihitsu) from 1833. - Ikeda's works range in appearance from stylish and elegant to slightly vulgar. Often they are hasty and somewhat superficial.
