Conrad Drzewiecki

Conrad Drzewiecki (born October 14, 1926 in Posen ; † August 25, 2007 there ) was a Polish ballet dancer and choreographer.

Drzewiecki was a solo dancer at the Poznan Opera from 1951 to 1958 and appeared in the leading roles in Dyla Sowizdrzał and The Sorcerer's Apprentice . In 1956 he won the Primo Premio Assoluto as a solo dancer at the International Ballet Competition in Vercelli . In the following years he completed his training in Paris in the areas of classical dance, jazz dance and ethnic dance and performed internationally with French troops.

In 1963 he returned to Poznan and became a choreographer and ballet manager at the opera. He had successes here with Maurice Ravel's La Valse , Igor Stravinski's Story of the Soldier , Georg Friedrich Handel's Water Music and the Adagio by Tommaso Albinoni .

In 1973 he left the Poznań Opera with a group of dancers and founded the Polski Teatr Tańca - Balet Poznański , which he directed until 1987. Here he created his own dance style by combining modern dance with elements of classical and folk dance. Important choreographies, among other things Krzesany by Wojciech Kilar , the Pavane pour une Infante défunte of Maurice Ravel , the Epitafium dla Don Juana of Eugeniusz Rudnik , the Third Symphony by Karol Szymanowski , the Odwieczne pieśni of Mieczysław Karłowicz and the Stabat Mater by Krzysztof Penderecki . He undertook numerous tours through Europe with the ballet and took part in the international dance festivals in Paris and Chateauvallon, the Baletto Oggi in Bari, the Musica Sacra festival in Milan , the Intercontri Musicali Romani , the Bregenz Festival and the Berlin Festival .

He also gave guest appearances in Havana, Amsterdam, Berlin, Malmö and Prague, was artistic director of the Poznan Ballet School from 1971 to 1980, taught as a guest at the Juilliard School and was a juror at international ballet competitions in Varna and Monte Carlo. After leaving in 1987, Ewa Wycichowska became the head of Polski Teatr Tańca . Drzewiecki continued to work as a choreographer at opera and drama theaters, worked with the Śląsk song and dance ensemble and produced around 20 ballet films with Polish television.

On the 25th anniversary of its existence, he choreographed for the Polski Teatr Tańca the Pieśń Roksany and Isolde's Love. For his work he was awarded the First Degree State Prize for the Promotion of Polish Culture Abroad, the City of Poznan Culture Prize and, in 2006, the Golden Gloria Artis Medal for cultural merit .
