Ikimono Gakari ( Japanese. い き も の が か り ) is a three-member Japanese rock band that was founded in 1999 and was active in the independent field until March 2006. Today they are signed to Epic Japan Records .
Yoshiki Mizuno and Hotaka Yamashita founded Ikimono Gakari in Kanagawa Prefecture in February 1999, and in their early days mainly performed street performances. In December, Kiyoe Yoshioka joined and became the lead singer. A year later, the band was disbanded because none of the members could find any more time besides their studies. After graduation, the band was reorganized in March 2002. She released her first three mini-albums on an independent label until she hit the market in March 2006 with her actual debut single SAKURA . The song was used in NTT East TV commercials .
The band experienced a steep rise after their major debut. The three are now active in many areas and deliver music for series and films. First, in 2010, they contributed the theme song to the film Toki o Kakeru Shōjo ( 時 を か け る und) and shortly afterwards they delivered another song to the series Gegege no Nyoubou ( ゲ ゲ ゲ の 女 房 ). They also sang the third and fifth intro for Naruto Shippuden .
After the release (winter 2010) of their first best-of album, which sold over a million copies, the band announced that they would be taking a hiatus for six months or more because they were urgent after their hectic schedules over the past few years needed a break. The break lasted until July 2011.
On January 5, 2017, the group announced that they would end their group activities with immediate effect. Nothing is known about the future of the individual members.
