Ilgar Ibrahimoglu

Ilgar Ibrahimoglu (born November 5, 1973 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR ) is a Shiite mullah and prayer leader of the Juma Mosque in downtown Baku, Azerbaijan. His religious views gave him the involuntary title " Muqtada al-Sadr of Azerbaijan ".

Life

Ibrahimoglu studied Islamic theology in Qom , then spent time studying in Poland . After the presidential elections in Azerbaijan in 2003, he was arrested and banned from any religious activity. After his release, Ibrahimoglu founded the DEVAMM ("Center for the Protection of Religious Freedom"), an organization which - according to its own statements - campaigns for human rights. First on the DEVAMM agenda was the abolition of the headscarf ban for women on Azerbaijani passports. For the government in Azerbaijan, Ibrahimoglu is "a problem" because he is related to and religiously close to Iran .

Since Azerbaijan does not have an ayatollah despite the Shiite majority , the "Islamic Party of Azerbaijan" was banned under its leader Movsum Samadov in 1995, the rank of prayer leader ( imam ) is the highest institution for Shiites in the country. Ibrahimoglu is included in the list of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world.
