Illustrations (waltz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Illustrations is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 331). The work was performed for the first time on January 26, 1869 in the Sofienbad-Saal in Vienna.

Remarks

The waltz was written for the carnival ball of the writers and journalists' association Concordia in 1869 and was premiered on the occasion. The title name refers to illustrations in newspapers and magazines. Of course, as it had become an annual tradition, this work was also dedicated to this association. The reviews mention that the waltz had to be repeated a few times. As a result, the work disappeared from the concert schedule. This was also due to the large number of Strauss' compositions in those years, which displaced each other from the concert plans. Today the waltz is played again occasionally.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 13 minutes and 21 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
