Robert C. Gresham

Robert Coleman Gresham (born November 12, 1917 in Booneville, Mississippi ; died August 16, 2005 in Naples, Florida ) was an American government employee. He was a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission from 1969 to 1982 .

Life

Robert was born to Jackson Files and Pearl (Bellamy) Gresham and had three siblings. He attended Grenada High School in Grenada, Mississippi and Sunflower Junior College in Moorhead .

He then studied at Southeastern University in Washington DC and at the George Washington School of Government . He graduated from both courses with distinction.

From June 1938 to January 1953 he was a special agent with the FBI in Washington. He worked in the office until 1942 and from then until 1946 in the field in the cities of Philadelphia, New York City and Washington. From 1946 to 1953 he was again employed in the office. He then served on the Council of State Chambers of Commerce until December 1965. From 1965 to 1969 he was the Republican Personnel Director on the House Appropriations Committee. In 1969 he was nominated by President Richard Nixon for the seat of the late Wallace R. Burke on the Interstate Commerce Commission and confirmed by the Senate on November 19, 1969. In June 1974 he was nominated again by Nixon for a second term until December 31, 1981 and confirmed by the Senate. During his tenure, Amtrak and Conrail were created . He remained in office until his successor on the Interstate Commerce Commission, Heather J. Gradison, was confirmed on June 18, 1982.

He was then from 1982 to 1987 Vice Chairman of the United States Railway Association . During this time the preparation and implementation of the successful IPO of Conrail took place.

He spent his retirement in Nables, Florida. He had been married since 1955 and had two children.

He was a member of the Republican National Committee , the Sons of the American Revolution , the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks , the Loyal Order of Moose , among others .
