The Illustrirte Wiener Extrablatt was a small-format Viennese daily newspaper that appeared from 1872 to 1928 .

history

Co-founder of the newspaper: the theater poet Ottokar Franz Ebersberg (1833–1886).

The newspaper was founded by the playwright Ottokar Franz Ebersberg and Franz Josef Singer . The first edition was published on March 24, 1872 by A. Neumann- Druckerei. From April 2nd, the founders took over this task themselves with the printing company Ebersberg & Singer .

From December 1, 1874 to October 29, 1883 Singer was the sole owner, publisher and printer until he was replaced as editor on October 30, 1883 by Edgar Spiegl von Thurnsee (1839-1908). On January 1st, 1884 he also took over the printing and founded the printing company of the Illustrirten Wiener Extrablattes .

From January 1, 1893, the printing house of the First Vienna Newspaper Company was responsible for printing. This company replaced Spiegl as publisher on January 17, 1897 and was now the newspaper's publisher.

From October 26, 1905, the newspaper was published by Elbemühl-Verlag , which also appears as the owner from September 30, 1922.

On July 25, 1924, Elbemühl sold the newspaper to the Wiener Allgemeine Zeitungs- und Verlags-Aktiengesellschaft, which took over the publishing, editing and printing of the newspaper.

The last edition of the Illustrirten Wiener Extrablatt was published on December 16, 1928. The newspaper's successor was the Neue Wiener Extrablatt , which appeared until February 11, 1934 - the day before the outbreak of the Austrian civil war .

Format and frequency of publication

Until 1922 the newspaper appeared with three columns in the format 36.5 × 22.5 centimeters (this is the same width as the Kronen Zeitung , but 6.5 cm higher). From February 1, 1922, the newspaper appeared a little larger in the format 41 × 28 cm.

The newspaper appeared daily until July 3, 1876. Subsequently, until February 1, 1922, the Illustrierte Wiener Extrablatt appeared twice a day as a morning paper and in an evening edition - with the exception of Sunday and Monday, where only one morning edition appeared.
