history

Coffee sack; 100 × 70 cm

Carlo Seitz from Basel founded the Swiss company Illy Café in 1939 together with Francesco Illy and Roberto Hausbrandt (the owner of the Hausbrandt coffee brand at the time ) from Trieste . The beginning was tough and at the beginning of the Second World War production had to be interrupted. From 1950 onwards, coffee production picked up again. The two partners later left the management of the company, while Seitz made Illy one of the finest addresses on the Swiss coffee market. He had acquired the knowledge and skills for this in the coffee country of Italy. The Swiss coffee pioneer died in 2007 at the age of 98. His son Riccardo Seitz continues the company in the second generation.

The connection with the Italian Illycaffè was dissolved in 1967 when Ernesto Illy sold the shares in the company. The Seitz family has been the sole owner of Illy Café and their rights to the Illy brand in Switzerland since 1969. The Italian Illy Caffè is sold in Switzerland under the name Amici .
