from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iluro was an ancient city in what is now Spain . It is the modern Mataró in Catalonia . In ancient times, the place was in the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis .

description

The city was located on a small hill about 400 meters from the modern sea coast and was founded in the first half of the first century BC. The place was probably a foundation to secure the seashore militarily. Iluro had a chessboard-like city map and was about 310 by 230 meters, which is about seven hectares. This is relatively small even by ancient standards. The insulae were square with a side length of about 35 meters, which corresponds to a length of 120 Roman feet . Because of the modern urban development, only little specific information about the city is known.
