Under the spell of masks (Spanish: El bosque de los pigmeos ) is the third volume of the youth book trilogy The City of the Wild Gods by Isabel Allende , published in 2004 by Hanser Verlag .

Kate Cold, a travel writer, is in deepest Africa with her grandson Alexander and the young Brazilian Nadia . Originally planned as a safari , the trip is developing into a new adventure. What started out lively soon turns into delicate experiences.

In search of two missing friars, the small group of now six people comes across a small village somewhere in the jungle, where the missing missionaries were last seen. The cruel King Kosongo, the militia leader Mbembelé and the mysterious, powerful magician Sombe rule here.

Alexander, Nadia and Kate, together with the intrepid pilot Angie Ninderera and the missionary Brother Fernando, try to free the harassed inhabitants of the jungle village and to end the enslavement of the pygmies who are also affected .
