Paula (novel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paula is an autobiographical novel by the Chilean writer Isabel Allende , published in 1994 .

The title-giving young woman Paula (the daughter of Isabel Allende) fell into a coma due to her metabolic disorder , porphyria . Her mother (i.e. Allende) hopes that she will wake up again and makes various attempts to improve her condition. She tells her sick daughter the story of her family from the arrival in Chile at the beginning of the century to the present: “Listen to me, Paula, I'll tell you a story so that when you wake up you won't be so lost. “ At the same time, the reader receives a portrait of the history of Chile . In the end, the daughter dies despite the mother's best efforts. The last chapter deals with their attempt to deal with the loss.

All in all, the book is an approach to dying and the intense engagement with seeing a loved one dying away.

The writing of the book goes back to a suggestion from her mother and was "very cathartic and better than therapy," said Allende.
