In the elder bush

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Im Holderstrauch (also: Beim Holderstrauch ; Transylvanian: Äm / Bäm Hontertstreoch / Honterstroch ; Romanian: Sub crengi de soc ) is an old folk song by Hermann Kirchner in which an elder bush is mentioned.

History of origin

Kirchner composed the work based on a text by his friend Carl Martin Römer (1860–1942). First a Transylvanian version was created called Äm Hontertstroch and shortly afterwards the High German version Im Holderstrauch of the song.

In 1904 the work was performed as an old Saxon folk song at a performance by the Viennese musician Heidenreich . Im Holderstrauch first spread through Transylvania in Romania and then over the entire German-speaking area. The song was included in many German songbooks from the first half of the 20th century , including the Kaiserliederbuch and the Landesliederbuch of the German Singers Association . It later made it to many other European countries.

In May 2011 a handwritten sheet of music under the title Sub crengi de soc was found in the Astra library in Sibiu , which proves the existence and distribution of a Romanian version.

On the Holderstrauch, on the Holderstrauch,
which blooms so beautifully in May
|: a little bird sang
a song of love and loyalty. : |

With the Holderstrauch, with the Holderstrauch,
we sat hand in hand;
|: We were
the happiest in the country during May. : |

With the Holderstrauch, with the Holderstrauch,
there has to be a divorce.
|: Come back soon, come back soon,
dearest of all, you! : |

With the Holderstrauch, with the Holderstrauch,
a girl cries a lot:
|: the bird is silent, the Holderstrauch
has not been in flower for a long time. : |
