In the Hotel zurgrün Wiese is the refrain of the German text that Fritz Löhner composed under his stage name Beda in 1923 for a foxtrot by the Danish composer Edvard Brink . The composition became known under the Swedish title Jazzgossen  ; it was published in 1922 in Nordiska Musikförlaget , previously Wilhelm Hansen, Copenhagen. In Germany it was published in the same year by the Viennese Bohème-Verlag Berlin-Leipzig-Vienna.

According to the note on the sheet music title of the German edition, the Viennese piano humorist Hermann Leopoldi had the song in his repertoire. And a decade later, the Munich folk singer Weiß Ferdl quoted it in his humorous lecture on “hits from old and new times”.

The song originally belonged to the program number Kamaeleonen (Chameleon) in Fønixrevyen from 1922 and was called "En lille rystedans" (a little shake dance); Alfred Kjærulf wrote the original Danish text.

The Swedish 'Revuekönig' Karl Gerhard wrote his own text on the melody Jazzgossen , with which he recorded the song in the Hotel Continental in Stockholm on September 4, 1922 for the Skandinaviska Grammophon . He also used it in the summer revue Ställ er i Kön ( Standing in the queue) from 1922 in the Stockholm Folkteatern . It became something of his signature tune.

In 1958 a sound film with the title Jazzgossen was created around the melody , in which Gerhard participated and performed the song.

The song became popular not only in Denmark and Sweden, but also in Belgium, Great Britain and the Soviet Union . In America, tenor Harry Steier sang a German version of the song Jazzgossen on gramophone record at the Victor Talking Machine Company in Camden NJ on October 4, 1923 . Jazz pianist Bengt Hallberg covered the song several times.
