In the fairy tale forest is a card game developed by Markus Nikisch , which was published in 2000 by the game publisher Adlung-Spiele . The game was nominated for Children's Game of the Year in 2001.

Game flow

A special feature of the game is that one to eight players do not play against each other, but can only win or lose together. The cooperative game works on a game system that is similar to the game Memory .

The players are called upon to find seven magical objects hidden in the eponymous fairy tale forest in order to heal a princess. Then they have to bring the items to the princess's castle. But the players play against seven dwarfs.

First, 49 playing cards are laid out in a 7 × 7 pattern, face down. This represents the fairytale forest. These cards contain seven cards on which the objects in question are depicted. Cards depicting witches, a raven, a castle and the competing dwarves are also included among these cards. Then the first magical item is drawn from separate starting cards. As in the case of memory, the players now reveal cards one after the other until the first item has been found. This card will now be replaced by a tree card that shows the next magical item. This continues until the team finds all seven items. Then the castle must be revealed so that the players can bring the items to the princess and win.

If a witch is revealed in the course of the game, any two cards are exchanged. If the raven is revealed, it steals an item that has already been found. If one of the seven dwarfs is revealed, it is put aside. When all seven dwarfs have been revealed, the dwarfs kidnap the princess and the game is lost.

Furnishing

The game was designed graphically by Franz Vohwinkel . Vohwinkel designed the game to be atmospheric, only trees and ravens are difficult to distinguish if there is insufficient lighting. The game is delivered in a cardboard box that can be carried in your pocket. The cards are made of high quality material. The instructions are well structured and clear, but only printed in very small font for reasons of space.

Background and reception

In the fairytale forest is the first game published by Markus Nikisch.

The editors of Spiel des Jahres rated Im Märchenwald as a tiny, tough guy. It also says:

“With IM MÄRCHENWALD, Markus Nikisch and Karsten Adlung have succeeded in creating a wonderful children's game, and a cooperative one in which adults and children alike have just as much fun. It's hard to believe that so much fun can fit in such a small box. "

Along with Rüsselbande by Alex Randolph and Klondike by Stefanie Rohner and Christian Wolf, it was nominated for Children's Game of the Year in 2001, which was won by Klondike.
