The Semnan Space Center (also Imam Khomeini Space Center , Persian پایگاه فضایی سمنان Paygah Fesai Semnan ), named after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini , is the central Iranian spaceport and is 50 km southeast of the city of Semnan in northern Iran .

history

Construction of the center began in 2003 and the inauguration took place in early 2008 with a test launch of the Kavoshgar 1 (Explorer 1, a modified Shahab-3B ). In February 2009, the country placed a 27 kilogram omid satellite from Semnan into orbit. Since then, the facility has been used regularly for the country's rocket launches.

The facility consists of two horizontal assembly areas and two launch sites for missiles, one older medium-sized and one newer one for larger missiles. There is also a test stand for engines, control and technical buildings. The facility also includes extensive underground facilities.
