Indaba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

indaba ( IPA : ínˈdaːɓa ) is the name for an important gathering of izinDuna (leaders) of the Zulu or Xhosa of South Africa . In the Swazi language the term is called indzaba . Indabas are assemblies of izinDuna of a certain community, but can also allow representatives of other communities.

Word meaning

The term comes from isiZulu and means "matter", "business".

use

The term is widely used throughout South Africa and now also often refers to simple meetings or meetings. It is also used in the field of scouting . The World Scout Indaba was a meeting of Scoutmasters.

Rowan Williams , the Archbishop of Canterbury , used the term in April 2008 when he announced a departure from plenary sessions to deliberate on formal resolutions for the bishops of the Lambeth Conference . He introduced a system of "middle sized groups for discussion of larger issues":

“We have given these [groups] the African name 'indaba groups', groups in which, in traditional African culture, people come together to solve problems that affect them all, and in which everyone has a voice and where attempts are made to do so Finding a common solution or story that everyone can share when they go home. That's how we want to go about it. That's what we heard This is the decision we came to when we prayed and thought and spoke together. "

in South Africa numerous 'indabas' take place every year; there are design, tourism, tax, mining and "baba" (baby) indabas.

The Design Indaba ('Conference on Creativity') is an annual cultural conference in Cape Town in February or March. Design Indaba was founded in 1995 and hosts an exhibition of South African design, a film festival and numerous workshops and parties. In 2013 the event had 50,000 visitors and generated R 326 million.

Tourism Indaba is a conference of people working in the African tourism industry. Tourism Indaba is one of the three largest tourism marketing events in the world and the largest in Africa. This indaba takes place every year in Durban .

Baba Indaba has been a baby and parent fair in Johannesburg , Cape Town, Pretoria , Durban and Bloemfontein since 2006 .

Tax Indaba is an annual tax event. It was founded by the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners and is supported by the state SARS recognized professional bodies .

Since the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban in 2011 , the Indaba format has also been used as a strategy in international summit diplomacy in order to reach quick agreements on controversial issues. The negotiations in Durban reached a complete standstill on the last day. The South African presidency of the conference then suggested that the representatives of the most important states meet in a circle to speak directly and personally with one another. Instead of making demands, red lines should be named that define thresholds that the negotiators did not want to exceed. Even with the climate negotiations in Paris in 2015 to an important role played Indabas compromise to be found. In the last few days there have been several indabas at every hour; the delegates were passed through the Indabas by rotation system so that the individuals could sleep.
