InDuna

InDuna ( ɪnˈduːnə , plural: izinDuna ) is a Zulu title meaning advisor , great leader , ambassador , commander of a group of warriors. It can also take on the meaning of speaker or mediator , since the izinDuna often act as mediators between the people and the king. The title was reserved for deserving officials, and was awarded by the king or chief to those who had earned the highest recognition for their achievements as leaders, courage, or service to the community. The izinDuna were regularly called to indaba (discussion groups) to discuss important matters.

Among the Ndebele in Zimbabwe , the title was also used collectively for a group of elite fighters led by an inDuna. The term has become established in South African English and Afrikaans and is often used there as a synonym for boss or leader . Also Chairperson (CEO) and Induna are sometimes used interchangeably.

Personalities

  • Leander Starr Jameson (1853–1917), British doctor and politician; he received the title from Lobengula , the chief of the Matabele (Ndebele) after Starr had successfully treated his gout .
  • Mbopa , an inDuna under Shaka . He was one of the main conspirators in Shaka's murder by his half-brothers Dingane and Umhlangana .
  • Ndlela kaSompisi was a general of the Zulu kings Shaka and Dingane; one of Dingane's most important advisors. Ndlela repeatedly refused to murder Mpande , Shaka and Dingane's half-brother. This made him the keeper of the bloodline of the Zulu monarchy, as all subsequent Zulu kings are descendants of Mpande. For this refusal, Ndlela was strangled.
  • Ntshingwayo Khoza (kaMahole) was the commander of King Cetshwayo (kaMpande). He commanded the warriors who defeated the British Army at the Battle of Isandhlwana .
  • Nathaniel Isaacs , a British adventurer, received the title of inDuna Incoola (Principal Chief of Natal) from Shaka and great estates at the same time.
  • Tinos Rusere , "Rhodesian Induna", was a union representative for the Rhodesian miners in South Africa. In 1977 he became the inDuna of the union for all southern African miners in South African mines.
  • Joseph Leabua Jonathan was a mine inDuna (foreman) in Brakpan and later became the first Prime Minister of Lesotho .
  • The Sudwala Caves got their name from the Swati -inDuna Sudwala .

Induna as part of the name

"Induna" is often used as part of the name to denote something or someone great (≈ the great), both literally and figuratively:

  • Ntabazinduna (Mountain of Chiefs) is the name of a mountain north of Bulawayo , Zimbabwe. The name refers to the custom of throwing izinDuna, which the king disliked, from the cliffs.
  • Induna , a racehorse that won the South Australian Derby in 1930 .
  • Induna , Canada 's largest crocodile (14 ft = 4.3 m, 1000 pounds = 454 kg) at Reptilia Zoo in Vaughan , Ontario .

  • In 1899, Winston Churchill escaped from a prison in Pretoria as a young war correspondent and used the Induna , a line steamboat , from Maputo Bay (Delagoa Bay) to Durban .
  • The SS Induna was a British merchant steamer (5086 GRT) that sank in World War II . He was bought by A. Stephen & Sons Ltd. in 1925. was built in Glasgow and was sunk by the German submarine Friedrich-Karl Marks (U-376) on the way from Reykjavík to Murmansk . Of the 66 inmates, 28 survived and were rescued by a Soviet mine sweeper.
  • The MV Induna Star was an Australian steel ketch weighing 81 tons . It was captured by the Japanese during World War II and the crew imprisoned. Some of the prisoners died in the disastrous sinking of the prison ship, the Montevideo Maru , which was sunk by an American submarine.
