Sudwala Caves

The Sudwala Caves are a cave system in South Africa , Mpumalanga Province , in the northern foothills of the Drakensberg at the transition from the Highveld to the Lowveld .

The rock surrounding the caves consists of Precambrian dolomite that is more than three billion years old . Today's Africa was still part of the ancient continent Gondwana . The Sudwala Caves themselves were formed around 240 million years ago, making them one of the oldest cave systems in the world.

600 meters of the extensive cave system are accessible as part of a normal tour, and 2,000 meters are accessible as part of special guided tours. The largest cave has a ceiling height of 18 meters and a diameter of 66 meters and is used for concerts.

The first recorded discovery of the caves to by the Swazi -Prinzen Somquba be done. At the beginning of the settlement of the area by Boers , the meter-thick guano layers left by bats were mined as fertilizer in the caves .

The Sudwala Caves are located around 35 kilometers west of Mbombela , north of the N4 motorway on the R539.
