The Independent Newspapers Limited (INL) was a member of the media industry in New Zealand . The company recently owned 59 regional and national daily newspapers in the country, as well as 14 magazines.

history

On December 10, 1906, The Wellington Publishing Company Limited was founded with the aim of bringing a morning daily newspaper to market in Wellington . It did so with The Dominion , a conservative daily that first appeared on the day (September 26, 1907) New Zealand was declared a Dominion . The newspaper's target audience were farmers and business people. In 1927 the newspaper took over the rival New Zealand Times and in 1964 Rupert Murdoch and his News Limited bought into the Wellington newspaper company.

On June 8, 1972, the Wellington Publishing Company merged with parts of the Blundell Bros , which published the Evening Post , and was henceforth called Independent Newspapers Limited . The Blundell Bros was later renamed Wellington Newspaper Limited in 1976 and dissolved in January 2003. In the following years, Independent Newspapers bought numerous newspapers and magazines in the New Zealand newspaper market and, together with APN News & Media, was one of the two dominant newspaper companies in New Zealand. On June 30, 2003, all New Zealand newspapers and magazines owned by Independent Newspapers were sold to John Fairfax Holdings Limited for A $ 1.036 billion .

The Independent Newspapers, however, was merged on July 1, 2005 with Sky Network Television Limited and the Merger Company 2005 Limited , first called Merger Company 2005 Limited and then renamed Sky Network Television Limited .
