IndieGala is an Italian company that operates a digital distribution platform for video games . It is best known for its video game bundles , similar to the Humble Bundle . In addition, IndieGala is a publisher and develops video games itself.

history

IndieGala started in December 2011. All previously published bundles did not contain the game as a download, but mostly only Steam access codes ( keys ). Games for other platforms such as Origin , Desura and Android were added later. Like Humble Bundle, the buyer has the option of paying exactly as much as he wants for the bundle ( pay-what-you-want model). The income of the bundle is divided among game developers , non-profit organizations and the bundle organizer (i.e. Indiegala), the composition of which can be determined individually by the buyer. While there was initially a greater focus on music albums that were contained in bundles, these disappeared completely over time. A special feature compared to other bundle providers are different promotions for one hour each. For example, the Beat the Average can be temporarily set at a lower price ( happy hour ).

Over time, the business model was adjusted: Among other things, an online shop and a platform where users can exchange Steam Keys were added. In addition, IndieGala is increasingly acting as a publisher and game developer, including for the following games:

criticism

In 2014, IndieGala was accused in a Gamasutra blog post by Josh Fairhurst, the founder of the indie developer Mighty Rabbit Studios, of not acting in the mutual interest, but simply wanting to make a profit, unlike other bundle providers. He justifies this with the fact that the business practice of IndieGala (through happy hours and the possibility to buy keys as gifts) allows the purchase of Steam Keys well below market value and encourages the resale of these keys on reseller websites, which in turn leads to a slump in sales Developers lead.

In December 2016, IndieGala advertised the video game Insurgency on Twitter and Facebook with an Islamophobic meme , after which over a thousand users on Twitter complained and asked the makers of Insurgency, New World Interactive , IndieGala to delete the tweet.
