Indraneil Das

Indraneil Das (born December 18, 1964 in Calcutta ) is an Indian biologist . His research focus is herpetology .

Life

Indraneil Das is the son of Chiranjib and Chitra Das, née Ghosh. In 1985 he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Calcutta . In 1988 he graduated with a Master of Science degree from Bhopal University. In 1991 he was with the thesis Trophic ecology of a community of south Indian anuran amphibians in Animal Ecology for Ph.D. PhD from the University of Oxford . From 1988 to 1998 he was a research fellow at the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Center for Herpetology. In his postdoctoral phase he was a research fellow at the University of Brunei Darussalam from 1991 to 1993 and from 1995 to 1996 he was a Fulbright scholar at Harvard University . Since 1998 he has been Associate Professor and Research Associate at the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC) at the University of Malaysia Sarawak . This is a member of the South Asian Reptile and Amphibian Specialist Group, the Society for Southeast Asian Herpetology, and the European Molecular Biology Association.

The research interests of Indraneil Das concentrate on the ecology, systematics and biogeography of amphibians, reptiles but also mammals in tropical Asia. In 1997 he succeeded in rediscovering the Andaman white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura andamanensis ) and the Jenkins-white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura jenkinsi ) on South Andaman Island , two species that were previously only known from the specimens collected in 1901 and 1972, respectively. In July 2011 Das was part of a team of scientists who had rediscovered the rainbow toad ( Ansonia latidisca ), which had been lost for 87 years, in Borneo .

Dedication names

In 1998 the toad species Adenomus dasi was described, but in 2009 it turned out to be the species Adenomus kandianus, believed to have been lost since 1876 . In 2002, Aaron M. Bauer named Cnemaspis indraneildasii in honor of Indraneil Das. In the same year he was honored in the type epithet of the type Japalura dasi .
