Industrie Meccaniche Aeronautiche Meridionali

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The company Industrie Meccaniche Aeronautiche Meridionali SpA (about: "Southern Aircraft Construction and Machining GmbH") is an Italian aircraft manufacturer based in Naples .

Originally, the company was part of the Officine Ferroviarie Meridionali (approximately: "Southern Railway Works"), which began in 1923 to manufacture aircraft. From 1925, Fokker aircraft were built under license, such as the IMAM Ro.1 . Airplanes were also manufactured for Fiat . The abbreviation Ro in front of the number means Romeo. This abbreviation has been used by all types manufactured since 1925 and was derived from the surname of the company owner Nicola Romeo , who was also the owner of a Milan-based automobile and aircraft engine manufacturer.

In 1934, the company Società Anonima Industrie Aeronautiche Romeo (about: "Romeo Luftfahrtindustrie GmbH") , which was founded especially for this purpose, took over this part of the now insolvent railway supplier and immediately started building its own constructions. In 1936 Breda took over the Romeo works and finally formed the Società Anonima Industrie Meccaniche e Aeronautiche Meridionali

The planes weren't particularly successful. Only the reconnaissance aircraft IMAM Ro.37 and the IMAM Ro.43 were produced in significant numbers. After the Second World War , the company operated as Aerfer from 1950 .
