Diehl Defense Land Systems

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diehl Defense Land Systems GmbH , formerly industrial Saar (IWS) in nordsaarländischen Freisen claims to be the largest civil maintenance of armored, as well as non-armored wheeled and tracked vehicles for the Bundeswehr . Their vehicles and individual assemblies are also repaired for the US Army . IWS is also the only manufacturer of the German Armed Forces STW 90 road tankers . The company operates as a GmbH and with its five hundred employees is by far the largest employer and trainer in the region. The company is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000 , DIN EN ISO 14001: 2005, NATO-AQAP 2120, NMP (National Maintenance Provider) AMC, SRA-TACOM (Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command), military specifications MIL-Q-9858A and MIL-I-45208A, among others. The IWS supports the Bundeswehr with training and repairs in the Army Combat Training Center (GÜZ) on the Altmark military training area near Letzlingen .

Industriewerke Saar GmbH was 17% co-owner of HIL Heereninstandsetzunglogistik GmbH , founded in February 2005 , an amalgamation of several German armaments companies, which can thus guarantee the bundling and provision of 70% of the army's weapon systems . In February 2013, the Federal Republic of Germany took over all the shares in HIL held by private sector partners, so that HIL has been run as a purely state-owned company ever since.

In 1963 the company was founded as Auto Union Saar . Just four years later, the name was changed to Industriewerke Saar . In 1979 the Diehl Group from Nuremberg took over 50 percent of the shares. The remaining 50 percent followed in 1992. In 1989, the tank truck and driver's cab manufacturer Aurepa in Hockenheim was acquired . The company is part of the Diehl BGT Defense subgroup , which also includes the Nonnweiler - Mariahütte and Maasberg locations, which are only a few kilometers away . In December 2014 Diehl announced that it would sell the Diehl Defense Land Systems division with its plants in Freisen and Remscheid to Krauss-Maffei Wegmann , subject to approval by the Federal Cartel Office .

The company's location has its own siding to the Ostertalbahn at Schwarzerden station , which has since been abandoned due to pending renovation work. The connection by truck is via the A 62, only a few hundred meters away .
