An infusion system or infusion set is a medical device used to connect an infusion container to a parenteral access (often intravenous , subcutaneous or intraosseous ; rarely intraperitoneal or intraarterial ).

It consists from top to bottom

  • a spike for piercing the rubber stopper on the infusion container (1),
  • a drip chamber (2) with ventilation (green in the picture),
  • the transparent infusion line (3)
  • a flow regulator (orange in the picture) to control the speed at which the infusion fluid enters the body (4), and
  • a connection connector (e.g. according to the Luer system ) for connection to the access, e.g. B. a peripheral venous catheter (5).

Infusion systems are usually sold as a sterile packaged single-use product. Many manufacturers (e.g. B. Braun , DKS Loversan , Söhngen , etc. ) use the term “infusion device” instead of an infusion system.
