As infusoria ( latin infusoria , plurality of infusorium ), infusoria or infusoria refers to small, z themselves. B. in the infusion of plant material developing animals (e.g. flagellates , ciliates , amoeba ).

In aquariums they are sometimes used to breed young fish. The excessive occurrence of infusoria is generally a sign of poor water quality, as they feed on bacteria and suspended organic matter.

The "Infusorienthiere" had the rank of an order in the animal system of the 19th century .
