Overall, very little is known about Ingram de Umfraville's life. He was the younger son of Gilbert de Umfraville and Elizabeth Comyn , a daughter of Alexander Comyn . While Ingram's older brother Robert inherited the title of Earl of Angus , it seems that he himself focused primarily on a chivalrous life. He was famous for his skills as a warrior and participated in many battles against the English during the early stages of the Scottish Wars of Independence . In the inner Scottish power struggle, he was initially in the camp of Balliol's supporters. So he took over in 1300 together with William de Lamberton and John III. Comyn took over the reign as Guardian of Scotland for the resigned Robert the Bruce .

After the assassination of John III. Comyn, to whom Ingram was related through his mother, through Robert the Bruce in 1306, Ingram appears to have sided with the English King Edward I and against Bruce. At the Battle of Bannockburn he fought on the English side. After the English defeat, he fled to Carlisle with his brother Robert and the Earl of Hereford , where they sought refuge in Bothwell Castle . The commandant of the castle, a native Scotsman named Walter Fitz Gilbert , ran over to the Scots and handed the castle over to his guests.

In the following years he reconciled with Robert the Bruce. In 1320 he appears as one of the Scottish signatories of the Declaration of Arbroath. After Robert I had his close friend David de Brechin executed for treason in the same year, Ingram again turned away from the king and moved to England, where he retired. Practically nothing is known about the last years of his life; he probably died around 1325.
