Ingrid Winterbach

Ingrid Winterbach (born February 14, 1948 in Johannesburg ; born Ingrid Gerda Winterbach , real name Ingrid Gerda Gouws , pseudonym Lettie Viljoen ) is a South African writer and visual artist . She writes in Afrikaans and has received numerous South African literary awards.

Life

Ingrid Winterbach attended Florida High School in Johannesburg. She then studied Afrikaans, Dutch and fine arts at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. With DJ Opperman at the University of Stellenbosch she earned a master's degree. She then worked as a teacher in Louis Trichardt and Johannesburg, as a journalist for the daily newspaper Die Burger in Cape Town and as a lecturer in the Department of Creative Arts at Stellenbosch University. From there she changed to a teaching position for Afrikaans and Dutch at the University of Natal in Durban . Until 1996 she wrote under her pseudonym Lettie Viljoen . From 2002 she devoted herself exclusively to a career as a writer and painter.

She is married to the painter Andries Gouws and lives with him in Stellenbosch. They have two daughters together.

In 2004 Winterbach received the Hertzogprys for prose, the most important prize for literature in Afrikaans. She won the award again in 2013.
