Inmarsat A was a maritime mobile satellite service offered by the communications company Inmarsat .
In 1982, Inmarsat A made it possible for the first time in history to establish radio connections between mobile devices. Inmarsat worked exclusively analogue and offered the following communication options:
- Telephony / voice connection
- fax
- Data transmission (e.g. Internet) with 9.6 - 64 kbit / s.
Inmarsat A was operated with four geostationary satellites , which were positioned over the equator . Inmarsat A did not cover the regions north 70 ° N and south 70 ° S.
Inmarsat A was discontinued on December 31, 2007 at 23:59 UTC . Inmarsat B was its successor .
