Inna Bocoum (born May 19, 1984 in Bamako ), better known as Inna Modja , is a Malian singer and model.

Life

Inna Bocoum was born on May 19, 1984 in the Malian capital Bamako as the sixth of seven children. She sang from an early age and attended a choir since she was six. Her father encouraged her to make music, and she was also strongly influenced by her siblings; She also regularly visited her neighbor Salif Keïta , member of the Bamako music group Rail Band , which regularly performed bossa nova and jazz concerts.

Musical career

She gave her first major concert in the program Fête de la Musique on the French television channel France 2 , where she sang the song Lucky with Jason Mraz . In October 2009 she released her first single Mister H with songs from the pop-soul genre under her stage name Inna Modja. Accompanying the publication, she appeared in other television programs such as Vivement Dimanche and Taratata . The single was followed by the album Everyday Is a New World that same year .

In June 2011 Inna Modja released a new single called French Cancan (Monsieur Sainte Nitouche) , which became the French summer hit of 2011. She repeated the success with the single La Fille du Lido , the second single from her second album Love Revolution . The video of their third single, I Am Smiling , released in February 2012, was a collage of videos from their fans.

In 2015 Inna Modja released her third album Motel Bamako , on which she musically changed genres and went from pop-soul to rap / house. In addition, she sang her songs mainly in Bambara , a few in English and French.

Sociopolitical positions

Bocoum is particularly committed to opposing the practice of female genital cutting, which is widespread in Mali . She was also circumcised - unsolicited by her parents - at the age of five. She addressed this in one of her songs. She also speaks out publicly against violence against women and is the godmother of the women's shelter at the hospital in Saint-Denis , north of Paris.
