Innisidgen

The entrance graves of Innisidgen Upper and Innisidgen Lower are dolmens from the Bronze Age (2500–750 BC) of the Isles of Scilly , which, like some 100 other monuments, are located on the hilltops and plateaus.

Innisidgen

The entrance tombs of Innisidgen on the Isle of Scilly of St Mary's are near the coast between fields. Your current location is the result of rising sea levels. Both facilities were robbed when they were entered in modern times.

Innisidgen Upper

Innisidgen Upper, or Innisidgen Carn, is one of the best preserved entrance tombs on the Scillys. The oval mound measures about nine by eight meters and is about two meters high. The curbs of the hill are almost a meter high on the north side. Traces of a platform surround the hill. A short, open corridor area leads to the access on the east side, which is covered by a massive lintel . Four cap stones form the roof of the rectangular 4.5 m long and 1.5 m high chamber.

Innisidgen Lower

The more heavily damaged Lower Innisidgen lies 90 m to the northwest and has only retained two of its capstones and some curbs. The hill itself contains boulders. The access to the chamber is on the south side. A prehistoric field system survives on the north slope of the hill next to the plants. The close pairing of the monuments with the cultural landscape is a specialty of the Isles of Scilly.

context

Entrance graves (also called "Scillonian Entrance Grave" or "West County tomb") are a megalithic design that can be found in Cornwall , on the Channel Islands and 5 times in County Waterford , Ireland , in addition to the Isles of Scilly . In France, especially in Brittany , they are known as " V-shaped dolmens ". Most of the Isles of Scilly are located in roughly round hills, which are bordered by curbs and cover a rather rectangular chamber made of large granite slabs . Some hills lie on a large platform lined with stones. The excavated sites contained human bones and cremated urns . The Knackyboy Carn on St. Martin contained the remains of at least 60 individuals. Entrance graves seem to have been in use on the Scillys longer than in the other regions.
