The Dresden-Reick innovation power plant is a thermal power plant located in Dresden and is operated by Stadtwerke Dresden GmbH . The system consists primarily of the thermal power station, which is operated with natural gas or heating oil , several heat storage systems as well as a photovoltaic system and an experimental electrical battery storage system connected to it . This is Saxony's first commercial battery storage system that is being tested as a primary control system for the public power grid.

location

The innovative power plant is located in the Reick district of Dresden . Opposite is the rail system of the Dresden S-Bahn .

history

The Dresden-Reick thermal power station was built from 1972 to 1976. It was put into operation in 1976 and has been supplying electricity to several parts of Dresden since then. The cogeneration plant was built in the panel construction style and has been rebuilt or renovated since 1986, 1992, 1996, 2005, 2008 and 2017.

The photovoltaic system was built in 2014. It has an area of 5000 square meters and consists of 4080 solar modules. It generates up to 600 kilowatts of alternating current. The solar cells face east and west so that electricity is generated more evenly throughout the day.

The biggest renovation since 1976 took place since 2017. It consisted of the construction of two new chimneys, the demolition of old chimneys and the construction of new heat accumulators. A total of eight million euros will be spent on this.

Furnishing

The tallest chimney was 220 meters high, was put into operation in 1976 and was the second tallest building in Dresden. It was demolished between September 2017 and April 2018. The reason for the demolition is the high energy requirement and the daily keeping dry (8 hours) as well as the maintenance costs. It was replaced by two 50 m high steel chimneys. In 1976 an approx. 75 m high brick chimney was built and is still in use today.

The thermal power station stores its energy in heat storage systems with 40 tanks and a total volume of 6,600 cubic meters.
