Innwerk settlement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Innwerk settlement was built in 1938/39 for employees of the Innwerk in the district of Gars-Bahnhof of the Upper Bavarian community of Gars am Inn , an almost unchanged ensemble of National Socialist small settlements.

Description and construction history

The little houses, which are arranged in a linear fashion on both sides of Innwerkstrasse, are located to the east, slightly outside of the town, and are slightly elevated opposite the roadway and are reached via small embankment stairs. The closed ensemble follows in every respect the ideal of the community settlement postulated in the early period of National Socialism (until approx. 1937/38).

The planning was carried out in 1938 by the Munich architect Michael Steinbrecher , construction was carried out in 1938/39. Twelve small settlement sites were created (along the access road to the barrage) in a simple design and with modest equipment. The simple houses on a functionally extremely reduced rectangular floor plan already have a steep gable roof above the ground floor and show no ornamentation. They were built in accordance with the principles of the “Regulations on the Promotion of Small Settlements of April 21, 1936”, using limited resources and extremely sparingly equipped. However, the details of the traditionally shaped structures certainly correspond to the practicality of Bauhaus theory .

The settlement, which has largely been preserved in its original state, can be seen as a prime example of small settlement construction during the Nazi era. The settlement sites remained the property of the plant for a long time and were therefore not individually remodeled in the 1950s to 80s, unlike the settlements that were otherwise mostly privately owned.
