Inscription from Gnjosdowo

The inscription from Gnjosdowo (wiss. Transliteraton: Gnëzdovo) is an inscription on a clay pot from the middle of the 10th century in Cyrillic script . It is the oldest known Cyrillic inscription in the Kievan Rus region and was found in a tumulus in Gnjosdowo , Russia .

The inscription appears to consist of the word ГОРОУХЩА ( GOROUCHSCHTSCHA ), but there are also other readings, such as B. ГОРОУНА ( GORUNJA ). The meaning of the first reading is unclear because otherwise the word is not occupied. The meaning of the second reading would be the personal name 'Harun' in the genitive: Harun's amphora , which would fit the fact that the amphora comes from the Krym, where merchants of various origins had their offices.
