Insein prison

The Insein Prison (pronounced like the English "insane" for insane ) is a prison in Insein in the Yangon region north of Rangoon in Myanmar .

history

The prison was built in 1886 on the Pentonville model , which in turn was based on the theories of Jeremy Bentham .

Current situation

The prison is currently run by the military junta and is largely used to suppress political dissidents.

The Burmese Ministry of the Interior gives figures of around 400 guards and 5,000 prisoners. Independent estimates put up to 10,000 prisoners.

The prison is known worldwide for its unworthy and dirty conditions and torture methods. One of the most famous inmates is the human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi , who was imprisoned here for several months in 2009.
