Institución Libre de Enseñanza
The Institución Libre de Enseñanza , or ILE for short , was an educational movement in Spain that was inspired by the philosopher Karl Christian Friedrich Krause , whose ideas shaped Spanish liberalism in the 19th century. It was founded in 1876 by some university professors (including Francisco Giner de los Ríos , Gumersindo de Azcárate , Teodoro Sainz Rueda and Nicolás Salmerón ). Its aim was to protect teaching at schools and universities from political and religious influence. The ILE was particularly directed against the reforms that Antonio Cánovas del Castillo had introduced in 1875 . These restricted the freedom of teaching insofar as they were directed against the dogmas of Catholicism .
