Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes

The Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes ( IRHT for short ) is a French research institution supported by the CNRS , with its headquarters in Paris and a branch in Orléans (since 1977). The tasks are the codicological research of medieval manuscripts and the transmission history of texts that were created in the Mediterranean region. The time frame ranges from antiquity to the spread of book printing after the middle of the 15th century.

Since it was founded by Félix Grat in 1937, it has been collecting microfilms of manuscripts and slides of individual pages and details from illuminated manuscripts . The collections currently comprise 55,000 films and 95,000 slides, which serve as the basis for a number of databases that the Institute makes available for consultation online. The projects also include the development of the chartulars of the ecclesiastical rule of France in the Middle Ages. Since 1979 the IRHT has been coordinating the systematic filming of the manuscript holdings in the country's public and university libraries, with the exception of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF), which publishes its holdings in-house.

Directory of Greek manuscripts up to the 16th century on the basis of catalogs, worldwide, built up since 1971 by the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto . In 1993 the Section grecque of the IRHT took over the editorial support and the further expansion.

• Répertoire des cartulaires médiévaux et modern

The database, which is still in the process of being built, lists Chartulare , mainly from France and Belgium, from the 9th to the 18th century. It is based on Henri Stein : Bibliography générale des cartulaires français and also offers a glossary of the chart types and other terminology of the database (in French) as well as the names of the authors.

• JONAS: Repertoire des textes et des manuscrits médiévaux d'oc et d'oïl

Started in 2002 by the Section Romane des IRHT to record texts and manuscripts, codicological notes and bibliographical information in the Langues d'oc and Langues d'oïl . Since 2009 there have been collaborations with research groups at the universities of Chieti , Parma , La Sapienza in Rome and Stockholm in order to include epic, lyrical and didactic literature as well as universal chronology more closely.
