The Institute for Oceanography of the University of Hamburg (IfM; English also: Institute of Oceanography) is a university research facility based in Hamburg at Bundesstrasse 53. The institute researches and teaches in the field of application-oriented basic research in the field of oceanography , geology , and meteorology Ecology .

The Institute for Oceanography, along with other research centers and institutes at the University of Hamburg , is part of the Center for Marine and Climate Research (ZMK). It has been part of the CEN (Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability) since 2016. At the same time, it is a member of the Center for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW), a network to which six university institutes and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology belong.

tasks

The research activities are divided into the following areas: Theoretical oceanography (Carsten Eden), shelf sea oceanography and marine ecosystem modeling (Jan Backhaus), experimental oceanography (Detlef Quadfasel), remote sensing and data assimilation (Detlef Stammer) and climate modeling (Johanna Baehr). The focus is on:

  • the ocean circulation, surface flows of heat, fresh water and CO 2 , global atmosphere and biosphere
  • the shelf sea circulation using the example of the North Sea-Baltic Sea system
  • the interaction of physical and biogeochemical processes
  • land-ocean interactions; the transport of substances from land over shelf seas into the ocean
  • Global observations, assimilation and climate model initialization

The IfM is part of the Cluster of Excellence Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CliSAP) , which is funded by the German Research Foundation.

Research vessels

Research ship Meteor coordinated by the ZMK

The Institute's Center for Oceanography operates the so-called control center of the research vessels Meteor and Maria S. Merian . The research vessels are used for global basic research on the high seas and are sometimes used in collaboration with other research institutions and countries.

Regarding the task of the control center, the institute writes: “The control center of the University of Hamburg is responsible for the scientific-technical, logistical and financial preparation, handling and support of the ship operations.” The shipping companies F. Laeisz and Briese Schiffahrtsgesellschaft manage the ships.
