history

In 1985, the teaching and research focus on environmentally friendly and site-appropriate agriculture was established at the agricultural faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn. In 1986 a C3 professorship for organic agriculture was advertised for the first time at the Faculty of Agriculture. Ulrich Köpke from Göttingen was appointed to the position in October 1987 . A call from Köpke in 1988 for a C4 professor position for “Biological Operating Systems” at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Gießen was answered by the Bonn University with defensive measures: In 1989 the research center was expanded and a laboratory pavilion was built. In 1992 the Institute for Organic Agriculture was founded , which went hand in hand with an expansion of the facility's staff, room, equipment and financial resources. Since then, the acquisition of third-party funding has also been pushed; the annual volume of third-party funds in the early years after the institute was founded was between DM 450,000 and 700,000. Research activity was intensified, with participation in the DFG research group “Optimization strategies in organic farming” (1994 to 2000) and in the EU projects “European Network for Scientific Research Co-ordination in Organic Farming” (1994–1999) and "Strategies of Weed Control in Organic Farming (WECOF)" (2000 to 2004). The institute was still headed by Köpke in 2013.

Research priorities

Research at the Institute for Organic Agriculture focuses on issues relating to organic farming. The focus is on: the optimization of nutrient management , the production and safeguarding of high product quality , the optimization of weed control and the development of environmental assessment systems .
