history

The location of the Insurance Institute

The origins of the institute go back to shortly after the Second World War . After the war, the insurance industry was forced to create a new training facility for its junior managers. Since Cologne had been a center of the German insurance industry even before the war, the Higher Technical College for Insurance was founded here in 1949. In 1951 the institution was recognized by the state and is the only such institution to this day. In 1954 the technical school was renamed the German Insurance Academy, which from 1967 received the right to award its graduates with the title of business economist. In the course of the creation of the universities of applied sciences in Germany in 1971, the DVA was transferred to the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. After a reorganization of the departments, the institute was assigned to the Faculty of Economics in 2002.

By 2005 a diploma was achieved as a degree in insurance; In 2005, the course was converted to the international Bachelor system (Bachelor of Arts degree). Since 2013, the Bachelor of Science degree has been acquired.

Since the 2007/2008 winter semester , a master’s course has been offered that can be taken after the bachelor’s degree. As part of an extensive course reform, the Master in Insurance was renamed to Master Risk and Insurance from the 2017/2018 winter semester.

Since the 2015 summer semester, the ivwKöln has been offering the extra-occupational, fee-based master's degree in insurance law. The degree to be obtained is Master of Laws (LL.M.).

A special feature of ivwKöln is the strong focus on practice, many professors and lecturers also work in the insurance industry and can thus convey references to current developments in the insurance industry as well as practice-oriented knowledge. Over 600 students are currently enrolled at ivwKöln. Studies begin in the winter semester, and lectures usually begin at the beginning of October. The part-time master's degree in insurance law, which begins in the summer semester, is an exception.

Cologne model

A special feature of the institute is the combination of professional training as a businessman for insurance and finance and a bachelor's degree based on the so-called Cologne model .

The close combination of theory and practice is repeatedly mentioned as an advantage of this training, in which the participants can bring in the content learned during their studies directly in the respective training company. Almost all well-known insurance companies from Cologne and the surrounding area support this form of training and offer corresponding training positions every year. The proportion of students of the Cologne model in the total number of students in each semester is currently over 40%. There is no separation between the Cologne-based courses and normal students; both groups attend the same lectures and take the same module exams. There are only a few differences with regard to additional courses and tutorials, some of which the trainees cannot attend due to the peculiarities of the Cologne model.

The model provides for two to three days of lectures at the TH during the semester phases. The remaining days of the week, the Cologne models are trained in their respective companies. During the semester break , the Cologne models are used in the company all week.

The Cologne models do not attend a vocational school , but receive regular instruction from the insurance industry's educational center . These teaching units are mostly given by lecturers who work in the insurance industry. As a result, the training days mostly take place on the premises of various insurance companies in Cologne . In preparation for the intermediate and final examinations , intensive courses are held by the training center of the insurance industry, so that the Cologne models do not visit the training company at all at times; the exams do not differ from those of normal trainees.
